New Rhodesian Forum Newsletter # 2010 July

Dear Ouens,

Our Site, the New Rhodesian Forum became six months old. What started as a splinter blog for a Rhodesian thread at another forum became a very successful and resourceful Site of its own.

Membership News

These last weeks seen an influx of some new and very active Members - who contributed many original photos, documents and recollections for the NRF.

In light of Their contribution and support for the NRF the following Members were promoted onto the "rank" of Hardcore Members: new daddy, rabapone, Kerry M, bader, cassius, mrf2, Simon, mcoleman762 and neil0841. We thank Them for sharing Their precious time with Us!

Spamming seems to be the most numerous offence on the NRF - China and India-based users ijkl970, gongfan45, hijk381, jklm443, bills01 and JAHJEHOVAH009 tried to sell us wedding gowns and fake Nike shoes all the time. These users were deleted right away.

New Moderator

NRF proudly announces Her new US Moderator, new daddy. Ever since the foundation of Our Site, one of the prime concerns were the lack of a US timezone MOD. With the arrival of a willing and able Moderator, new daddy this issue seems to be corrected. We wish Him a joyful reign ;)

Encyclopaedia Rhodesiana

We started the most ambitious project of the New Rhodesian Forum so far - creating the Encyclopaedia Rhodesia. The goal is to create a free and most possibly complete knowledge base related to Rhodesia - Her History, Culture, People, etc. Right now the project is in an embryonic form - it has a wiki (a similar system to the well-known WikiPedia) installed and a very basic framework created. If You feel that You would like to contribute to the cause of upkeeping Rhodesia's Heritage - and You are willing to help Us to refine the Encyclopaedia Rhodesiana - please send one of the MODs a PM or email!

You can check out the Encyclopaedia Rhodesiana here: http://www.newrhodesian.net/encyclopaedia/

YouTube NRF Channel Novelties:

Our Hardcore Member, bader sent Us a film reel for publishing on the NRF YouTube channel. He had it on an old tape - He did all the converting and digitizing by local experts - so We MUST thank Him a lot for this!

New Features

Hi there Ouens,

today i added some new features to the site - which would make it somewhat more convenient.

1.) Because of the new and reliable host it is now possible to store attachmnts directly on the site - e.g. there's no more need for external storage sites.

2.) A chat module is installed on Our Site. This provides Registered Users a means to interact more freely via the www.newrhodesian.net boards. This feature, however cannot be seen or used by non-registered Guests.

3.) A Rhodesian Music Player is also installed on Our Site. This adds the possibility to listen to a selection of genuine Rhodesian music while reading and posting aboard the New Rhodesian Net.

That's all for now, Ouens:

Dear Ouens,

the New Rhodesian Forum came into being three weeks ago. Well, this is only a twinkling of time, but - for me - it had been a very long time.

Because this very day marks the arrival of our new domain, www.newrhodesian.net, i decided to make a little look-back.

On every day 31,73% of the Visitors are ones completely new to the site. This means a true growth potential.

I want to expand this sie to reach everyone sympathetic to the Just Cause of Rhodesia, or who is interested in the 'Last Crusade of the Free Men'.

Forgive me this statistical standpoint, but for other purposes there is Our New Site:

Our New Home - In Numbers

Hi there Buddies,

first of all, let me not talk about technical stuff and the like this time. Let me discuss here something much more important - how is our Community shaping.

I installed a statistical /analytical code into the forum engine, called 'Google Analytics'. This service is free and provides detailed statistical info about our site. As of now three days' info are available, which shows the activity on our site. Unbelieveable data follows:

  • 321 Guests and/or Users visited Our Site.
  • The visitors together made 4544 pageviews.
  • Visitors visited an average 14,16 pages per visit.
  • Only 28,66% turned back to the site where they came from (mostly from MP.net)
  • Visitors spent an average 13:49 minutes on the site per visit.

Now, i made a few site in my life, but never ever seen such data... 13:49 minutes average time spent on Our Site means to me that all i did concerning The New Rhodesian Forum was worthwhile.

Thank You for reading this & contributing on the site!

cheers:

A Long Weekend

Hi there Buddies,

this weekend was a long one, and a productive one. The site is now having way more than 1.000 photos, many videos, 210 posts in 27 topics and 47 registered users. This means five times more posts, three times more topics by twice the users than it were only two days ago.

We are having some quite active Users, who are starting to shape the landscape of the site, and it seems to really becoming the place to be.

On the technical side, further improvements were added to the forum engine, one of these being the support for embedding video.google.com videos. LiveLeak embedding support is coming soon.

Many Users not yet posted at all, but Their opinion is very important for me. So, please take Your time and let us know about Yourselves on Our New Rhodesian Forum.

The First Two Days

Hi there Buddies,

i've been off to a 24h duty, so i virtually left out of the happenings on the New Rhodesian Forum yesterday. I announced the start of the site, and had many hours to think about my new site, for example how many users there would be, will there be anyone who want to contribute... and so on.

Today i started with some more stabilisation programming, such as making the site compatible with embedded Youtube.com videos, and fixing a so-called SQL database connection mishap. I also invented some analytical features, which could help a lot later on, to further the development (a chat and video chat feature for example) of the site.

I plan to work a lot on the site (aren't anyone with an artistic vein there to design a logo, etc ...?) this weekend, either to provide more content, and to make the forum more convenient for All of You.

But, turning to some more interesting facts: After only two days of operation our New Rhodesian Forum has 41 posts in 11 different threads by 21 users, of whom the latest is our old friend, the original founder of the MP.net Rhodesian Bush War Photographs, BloodDiamondPants.

I think it could be considered a not-too-bad start for our forum. I ask You both to start discussions aboard the site, help me to get the things moving - and i think, all of us will be benefit from that.

cheers:

Our New Home is Ready

Gents,

after a considerable amount of downloading, uploading, programming, pimping and staring at my screen it is finally done... The forum is available for use from now on. It is, however, far away from being perfect, let alone stable.

I will do my best to fix the problems that (surely) will be discovered, and will do my homework concerning design features. Since my conception was to escape forward and create a forum ASAP, this is all what i can do in a mere two days.

Now i NEED YOU. Need You to inhabitate this place, to contribute and to advise me what would be the next step to be taken.

A normal web domain name will be available later (within wo weeks), this temporary domain is the one provided by the hosting company.

So... here is the link: http://newrhodesian.szerverland.com

See You Soon on The New Rhodesian Forum !
